SUNSHINE

LA threesome ASHRR aka lead vocalist Steven Davis and producer-musician-vocalists Josh Charles and Ethan Allen are back with a brilliant new album for Ralph Lawson's superb 20/20 Vision Recordings that finds them working by the old mantra of 'art for art's sake'. This effortlessly eclectic record collides electronic soul, post-punk, space disco and indie-dance and is rich in melancholic melody, hazy, late-summer moods and late-night dancing. The vocals bring an indie edge to jangling delights like 'Please Don't Stop The Rain' while 'What's Been Turning You On' is a laidback and languid groove for lazy sessions.

In a testament to Ireland’s vibrant musical history, Allchival presents an anthology celebrating the disco era’s hidden gems from Stuart Bingham's Sunshine. Culled from the annals of their studio recordings, this collection shines a light on the country’s lesser-known contributions to the global disco phenomenon.

Kicking off the compilation with Sunshine's electrifying "Boogie on Up," a testament to the band's prowess in embracing disco rhythms despite their pop cover origins. Produced by the acclaimed Paul Curtis, the track embodies the infectious spirit of disco, marking a pivotal moment for Irish disco hits. Accompanying it is "Don't Stop Me," radiating with Euro-disco vibes, further exemplifying Sunshine's versatility. Bingham recounts the bittersweet journey of "If This Is Free." Initially slated for success under Curtis's wing, the disco era's abrupt demise altered its trajectory, leading to an independent recording that retains a raw, garagey edge reminiscent of the era's ethos.

"Give It To Me" is another standout, blending Nile Rodgers-inspired arrangements with a Euro-disco flair. Stuart Bingham's production prowess and Rosey's captivating vocals converge to create an irresistible groove that transcends disco conventions.

Venturing into more experimental territory, "The Boogie Bug" showcases some Irish ingenuity in rap-infused grooves. Despite its ahead-of-its-time sound, the track faced resistance in a disco-weary landscape and rounding out the compilation is "Oh Gee, I Got U B.B.," a playful nod to dub-mix traditions.

This Sunshine anthology is a journey through Ireland's disco era, unearthing forgotten gems and shedding light on the country's rich musical tapestry. From Sunshine's infectious rhythms to Stuart Bingham's resilient spirit, each track encapsulates the era's vibrancy and innovation.

Donnell Pitman & Wines Of Sunshine

Brand New Funk

In a remarkable culmination of a nearly five-decade-long career, Donnell Pitman finally graces the music world with his debut album. While Pitman has long been revered among rare groove and deep crate diggers in the Windy City, it's the resurgent charm of 'The Chocolate Lover' that has undeniably become the defining chapter of his illustrious career, gaining momentum since the 2010s. His popularity continues to soar each year, propelled by new records, reissues, remixes, and notable placements in hit TV shows such as Stranger Things Atlanta, and Southside.

Sunshine Sound

Birthday Medley / X Medley - Edits By Francois K

Francois K is back on Sunshine Sound with more exclusive edits from the Loft and Paradise Garage days.

"Birthday Medley" is a hard grooving, disco-funk jam. With rampant woodblocks & cowbell, incessant guitar chops, street shouts and a slap bassline that'll make your arse cheeks red raw; FK has the mixer burning white hot throughout - a sure fire winner for the dancefloor.

"X Medley" is a more psychoactive affair. Heavy on the spacey flange fx, and looping up the drum sections for a more taut and tense, cosmic disco DJ tool; just wait for that bassline eruption and the keyboard drop! If you dig the Idjuts Boys' lysergic disco edits then you'll defo dig this!

SUPER limited copies - buy now or cry later!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Possibly my favourite of the Sunshine Sound edits thus far. Francois gives heft and bump to the Bohannan-esque, "Birthday Medley"; whilst "X Medley" sees cosmic drum workouts lead into seriously euphoric sugar rushes of disco bliss.

        Trophy Eyes

        Suicide And Sunshine

Just like the title Suicide and Sunshine, Trophy Eyes’ fourth album is about contrast. About light and dark. About beauty and tragedy. About the full spectrum of life, as told through the eyes of frontman John Floreani. “It’s the human experience,” says Floreani. “What we experience and how we navigate it. The millions of tiny flashes of light that are memories and thoughts and feelings and smells, all those little moments make up a lifetime. They’re beautifully tragic because they don’t mean anything to anyone, and on the scale of everything in the universe don’t mean a damn thing. But it’s so beautiful that they happen in the first place.”

Floreani’s willingness to dive so deeply into the most personal parts of his life is matched by the band’s desire to explore the very boundaries of the hardcore genre. Alongside Floreani’s impassioned vocals, drummer Blake Caruso’s insistent rhythms, Jeremy Winchester’s unflinching bass and the powerful guitars – handled by Floreani, producer Shane Edwards and former guitarist Andrew Hallett – the album is rich with anthemic hooks, dark modern pop (“My Inheritance”), electronic flourishes courtesy of co-producer Fletcher Matthews, and atmospheric, swirling synths (“Runaway Come Home” and “Sydney”).

"When we did Chemical Miracle, our second full length, the logo for the album was a palm tree and a noose. That’s literally suicide and sunshine. It’s always been there on my mind. And I think I finally just phonetically set it out. That encompasses everything I’ve been trying to do my entire career.”

          RAMP

Daylight / Everybody Loves The Sunshine

Two stone cold classics right here from the Roy Ayers masterminded RAMP, taken from the holy grail album Come Into Knowledge. Sampled the world over, influentially positive and as prized as they get, South Street’s new sub-label South Street Soul couldn’t have picked a more perfect double header to reissue as their inaugural release.

Although the RAMP acronym Roy Ayers Music Productions bared Ayers’ name, he did not perform with the Ohio band instead writing, arranging and producing the tracks alongside Edwin Birdsong and also William Allen. Drafting in some of the best session musicians in the game, from vocalists Sibel Thrasher and Sharon Matthews, The Spinners drummer John Manuel, guitarist Landy Shores and Cincinnati bass maestro Nate White, the result was pure ethereal excellence.

Rare groove at its finest ‘Daylight’ is one of the standout cuts from RAMP’s only album - soulful, sumptuous and laced with a celestial touch that takes this track to another realm of conscious. A track that was famously sampled by A Tribe Called Quest for their hit ‘Bonita Applebum’ and J Dilla’s remix of Common – Come Close.

On the B side, a Roy Ayer’s masterpiece given the RAMP revamp, an end of the night masterpiece, a hazed-out dreamer - just downright blissful grooves from start to finish. Ready-made to ride out into the sunset with.

Sean O’Hagan (Microdisney, High Llamas) compiles this retrospective of a songwriter, arranger and singer who understands the gift of the chord change, the endless intrigue of arrangement and always knows where and when the sun rises and falls. Lose yourself in this record and let me warn you. You’ll be humming the tunes and reliving the chorus’s and key changes for an age, and if you’re a songwriter you will probably be lifting the melodies without realising it.

              Uffie

              Sunshine Factory

Welcome to Uffie’s new album Sunshine Factory – an alternate reality that is only accessible to those yearning for escape. A nod to the ballroom scene, it is a place where you can be your most authentic self. Inside this trippy wonderland, you’ll meet Uffie, dancing amongst the lights of your hallucinations. Sunshine Factory is a wonderfully restless record. It’s a joyride through the club, hurtling into the forest, and crowd surfing into the arms of a lover… and yet it’s also the sound of waking up to a heap of champagne soaked jeans, the bass of your heart still throbbing along to last night’s melodies.

A decade after her first record, which included–debatably–the internet’s first viral hit, the electro smash “Pop The Glock,” Uffie “the French-American singer/rapper/DJ/fashion designer who took the internet by storm” (Brooklyn Vegan) is most definitely back. Raised between Florida and Hong Kong before moving to Paris with her British father, the now Los Angeles-based Uffie is undeniably a “child of the world;” unsurprisingly, the making of this record clocked up a few air miles as well. Birthing what would become the Sunshine Factory in Fonte da Telha, Portugal collaborating with Norwegian savant Lasse Lokøy, Uffie soon found a home for these songs back in California with Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi–who co-produced several of the tracks–and his Oakland-based label, Company Records. The resulting album is one of intricate production, sonic experimentation, and subtle poetic brilliance amongst a few Fleabag glances to the camera.

Amidst double entendres galore, her record exists in a curious space between punk and pop, which can be heard in the ska-meets-fashion week “dominoes.” Contrarily, “sophia” – which marked the advent of Uffie and Chaz’s creative partnership several years ago – poises Sunshine Factory as an otherworldly dance record one would hear in Berlin’s famous Berghain nightclub. She is the party girl who is at her most vulnerable in the chaotic “where does the party go?” where she reckons with facing who she truly is when she’s all alone. It’s in these dualities and juxtapositions that the joy of Uffie writhes.

The album also has a cameo or three, including the one and only Peaches. And after finding kinship and admiration in the genre-defying NNAMDÏ, she tapped him for the record’s sole feature on “month of mondays.” It is at this point in the record that the beloved je ne sais quoi that Uffie has always possessed really emerges. When the comedown begins and the insatiable few remain on the dancefloor, “a month of mondays” is the knowing nod to a stranger signaling the night’s shift in course. With Sunshine Factory, it’s a pop-up party wherever you can find some speakers. Cool.

                Cosmic Rough Riders

Enjoy The Melodic Sunshine - 2022 Reissue

Enjoy the Melodic Sunshine is a collection of songs by Cosmic Rough Riders featuring tracks from their first two self-financed albums as well as three new tracks. The album was put together by Alan McGee's label as a starting point for mainstream listeners . The album spawned four singles including the Top 40 hits "Revolution (In The Summertime)" and "The Pain Inside". Most of the tracks on the album were recorded in a community funded recording studio in Castlemilk housing scheme and released on two self-financed albums; Deliverance (1999) and Panorama (2000). On hearing Panorama, Alan McGee signed the band to a one-album deal. The album would take the best of the first two albums as well as some new tracks. Now 21 years later Past Night From Glasgow will take the original masters, add a bonus track "I Call Her Name"

Happy Song - The Francois K & Walter Gibbons Edits

Sunshine Sound deliver an absolute doozy for their vinyl debut, treating us to 'Happy Song', the original DJ tool from the legendary Francois K.

This is not just a bonus beat...This is THE bonus beat! This iconic rhythm track has been the source of countless samples, imitations & duplications since it first appeared in 1977. Now for the first time FK's original edit is available as a high quality stereo recording direct from tape. You may now put away your bootlegs.

Flip it over to find the long lost Walter Gibbons Battle Edit of 'Happy Song'.
Walter Gibbons, one of NYs founding DJs, would skilfully experiment with the rhythm live on turntables at his Galaxy 21 club residency, whipping the floor into a frenzy as well as inspiring FK to create his famous edit.
What you may not know is that Walter also worked on his own version of Happy Song. Pulsing with primordial stereo syncopation, Walter's previously unheard Battle Edit could be considered the Director's Cut.

This is just the beginning, prepare to amend the history books.

Package includes hand-stamped sleeve and information inlay.

Super limited, blink-and-you'll-miss-it Star Creature 7" from no other than David Zylberman - one of Egyptian Lovers' coveted synth men. He flips a pair of classic jazz-funk numbers, adding layers of syrupy synths to the Lonnie Smith's "Expansions" whilst adding some body-poppin', broken-beat flex to the Roy Ayers classic, "Everybody Loves The Sunshine".

Caned by taste making DJs who received upfront copies last November, this has to be one of the most anticipated Star Creature 7"s we've had for a while. Don't sleep!

                  Ella Fitzgerald

                  Sunshine Of Your Love

Reissue of Ella Fitzgerald's 1969 album of funky big-band cover versions, conducted by and featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano.

Ella Fitzgerald singing Eric Clapton's "Sunshine of Your Love", or the Beatles' "Hey Jude"? Something of a revelation for those who know Fitzgerald as purely a jazz singer. Ella's pristine clarity of earlier years, now tinged with a throaty worldliness, is a perfect foil to her choices from the world of rock and pop. It also adds new depth to such standards as "Give Me the Simple Life", "Old Devil Moon", and Burt Bachrach's "A House is Not a Home".

Recorded "live", the album is divided into a big band set and Ella with her longtime accompaniment, the Tommy Flanagan trio. Pianist Flanagan is simply one of the all-time greats. After listening to this, how can you not be a fan of Ella's?

Includes the original liner notes from Norman Granz, who produced this record.

                    Ajo Sunshine

Ajo Sunshine (pronounced “Ahh-Ho”) is heralded by an alarming horn ensemble, stabbing with the dramatic urgency of a killer’s theme in a midnight movie. It’s a jarring but appropriate entry point for this brilliantly blasted listen, an array of exquisitely sharp edges punctuated by kaleidoscopic respites of throbbing warmth and surprising tenderness. J.R.C.G. (Justin R. Cruz Gallego)’s previous work with Seattle’s excellent Dreamdecay may foreground the broad strokes here, but he’s pushed things way outward in terms of his sonic palette.

Abutting field recordings captured from rodeos off Ajo Way, a stretch of highway that leads one westward out of Tucson Arizona directly into the sun, both acoustic instruments and gleaming walls of synthetic noise are framed in dour and dissonant chord shapes, crackling with overdriven drum mics and seasick waves of distortion. It’s homage that plays out like a collage, a dream switching from station to station, a series of dedications broadcast on late night radio. All pin-hole size images from scenes never seen whole, strung together in but one version of complete, all making for a dazzling listen.

Gleefully jumping between late 80s synth-pop, the new boogie sounds purveyed by Gulf Point and People’s Potential Unlimited, with touches of insouciant Francophone pop and modern indie-dance, “Private Sunshine” bursts into our headspace this Autumn.

The London native first made her mark professionally as keyboardist for New Young Pony Club, one of THE bands at the epicentre of the white hot day-glo nu rave scene alongside the likes of the Klaxons and Test Icicles in 20060. This particular offering is much more indebted to Hayter's adolescent diet of Bowie, Prince, Human League and Madonna whilst hanging loose with a plethora of modern day contemporaries (listed below).

Full to bursting with evocative electro-soul love letters to her home town of London, alongside addictive bubblegum flavoured bursts of indie-disco. It’s like Kylie meeting Mr Fingers or Tom Nobel producing Peggy Gou – something beautiful and melancholic yet sharply modern and new.

From the warm, woozy, lysergic harmonies of opener “Cherry on Top”, which sound like a beloved old cassette unravelling, to the fizzy, infectious “Cold Feet”, which calls to mind Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam at their most heartworn, taken in toto the album perfectly nails the essence of gorgeously nostalgic synth-pop with a twist; crisp, stylish and sophisticated music which heralds the next chapter of Lou Hayter quite nicely, actually. Her retro-futuristic results will give 2021 the pop fix it so desperately needs and if you're looking for stuff that'll coexist happily alongside Silver Linings, The Orielles, Lonelady & Crazy P on your next mixtape, then this is the surely the ticket.

                      STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Lou Hayter's "Private Sunshine" thankfully arrives just in the nick of time, preventing Crazy P from getting a restraining order out on me for over-obsession and repeat listening. The cliché that circulated after the 2016 election foretold a new artistic golden age: Artists would transform their anger and anxiety into era-defining works of dissent in the face of authoritarianism.
Yet Bob Mould calls his new album Sunshine Rock.
It’s not because Mould—whose face belongs on the Mount Rushmore of alternative music—likes the current administration. His decision to “write to the sunshine,” as he describes it, comes from a more personal place – a place found in Berlin, Germany, where he’s spent the majority of the last three years. Here Mould would draw inspiration from the new environments.
“Almost four years ago, I made plans for an extended break,” Mould explains. “I started spending time in Berlin in 2015, found an apartment in 2016, and became a resident in 2017. My time in Berlin has been a life changing experience. The winter days are long and dark, but when the sun comes back, all spirits lift.”
These three years in Berlin would quite literally shed new light on Mould’s everyday mindset.

“To go from [2011 autobiography] See a Little Light to the last three albums, two of which were informed by loss of each parent, respectively, at some point I had to put a Post-It note on my work station and say, ‘Try to think about good things.’ Otherwise I could really go down a long, dark hole,” he says. “I’m trying to keep things brighter these days as a way to stay alive.”

That makes Sunshine Rock as logical a product of the current climate as any rage-fuelled agit-rock. Variations on the word “sun” appear 27 times in five different songs over the course of the album’s 37 minutes. To hear Mould tell it, the theme developed early.
“Sunshine Rock is one hell of a way to wrap up the busiest decade of my career,” he shares. “The autobiography, the Disney Hall tribute show, reissues of several albums from my catalogue, three current rock band albums, several world tours, and now this new album — I’m humbled and grateful to still be making new music while celebrating my lifetime songbook.”

                      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The aptly titled Sunshine Rock is indeed another side to Mould, eschewing the dark undertones of his previous work, focusing on the more optimistic pop spirit that has always provided the counterfoil to his trademark gloom. Major-key resolutions to slowly-grown unease lifts the mood once again into shining summer haze. Exactly as accomplished as you'd expect from Mould, but a good deal more optimistic. Lovely.

                      Koolaid (Holy Sunshine!)

                      Koolaid (Holy Sunshine!)

Following their (Global Tyranny) incarnation the artists occasionally known as Koolaid return in their new guise of (Holy Sunshine!) to question the burning answer of our time: reality is a put-on?

Who or what is The New Agent? Who or what are The N.W.D.F.? Where is The Canyon? Does The Canyon even exist? Can the Circuit Break? If you can grok 7 Up then is it possible to get 8 Up? Is it really just a choice between Turn On or Turn Off? ...and where did the hippies really come from? Cause suddenly they were just there... CIA / FBI / LSD / Gettin' High / Monterey Pop / Vietnam / Timothy Leary / Groovy, Man...

It's a whirlwind double-tryptamine blast thru Acid Rock, West Coast Tech, Surf Sitars, Post Punk Junk, 808 FolkBuzz, 303 PulseBeat, Backwoods Reverb, Unplugged No-Wave, Twin Jag Attack, Secret Agent Men... and A Sample Storm of unwitting guests such as Allen Ginsberg, Ralph Malph, The Ambrosia Singers, Art Linkletter, Herbert Marshall McLuhan, and Doctor Leary hisself.

                        Peter Fonda says "WOW".

Koolaid themselves say "did you hear the one about the love and peace movement being a
test-tube baby birthed in a secret military lab in the heart of hippie heaven?"

We hadn't. But could it be that Koolaid (Holy Sunshine!) are hinting that the Classic Rock Music of the late 60s & early 70s was created to brain-wash the human population of Planet Earth? When confronted with this possibility they replied "Well, it may be true or it may not, but we just wanted to kick out the jams & get it on."

                        Captain Sunshine

                        The Ocean Inside

Captain Sunshine is the alias of Jon Tye, one half of revered cosmic quakers Seahawks. The style shares many of Seahawks deep space aquatic vibes but is if anything even more salt washed and faded, spaced and misted. The Ocean Inside was recorded alone during a particularly long and dark winter voyage. A dose of flu helped create a deep dream state, sometimes unsettling at others blissfully narcotic. The analog tape recordings were later cut and spliced together with occasional overdubs of guitar and vocal to form a collection of celestial tone poems that at times recall early Eno, Vangelis, Joe Meek’s ‘I Hear A New World’ or even Aphex Twin’s selected ambient works. Deep and meditative, warm and enveloping, this is a great album to put on of a clear evening as you stare at the stars, watch the distant ships bobbing on the waves or simply zone out in your favourite place.
The digital download that accompanies the cassette also includes some exclusive tracks and bonus content plus all the individual tracks.

The Austin, Texas trio will kick off the new year by releasing God's Dream, a 12-inch LP on Invada Records UK. The album is set to be released on 19th April 2014 Record Store Day. arm guitars and pulsing drums combine to form an aggressively atmospheric bubble, encompassing the listener in an infectious cohesive which blends the sounds of an era when Sonic Youth and Jesus and Mary Chain walked the Earth with a forward thinking and creatively stubborn indie darling. Joined by Adam Franklin of Swervedriver on the track "Nowhere" and Jeff Schroeder of the Smashing Pumpkins on "Chainsaw Morning," Ringo Deathstarr has created a flawlessly crafted sound on God's Dream, destined and deserving to exist on vinyl. Thankfully for enthusiasts, that is exactly where God's Dream has ended up. Ringo Deathstarr will release an exclusive run of sunshine yellow vinyl, limited to 500 copies. ingo Deathstarr, a musical trio from Austin, TX, have been putting out records since 2007. Consisting of Elliott Frazier (guitar, vocals), Alex Gehring (bass, vocals), and Daniel Coborn (drums, vocals), their sound is born from a love of melody, a love of guitar, and a hatred of pompous vocals. Finding it to be too much fun, the group has expounded upon the sounds of the masters before them. This desire to play the music they were too young to witness as children has taken Ringo Deathstarr around the globe, performing in places as far flung as Israel, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Europe, Canada, and the continental USA, supporting favorites like ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Dean Wareham, The Wedding Present, and The Smashing Pumpkins. With two full length records (Colour Trip and Mauve) and a handful of EPs and singles in the bag, now is the time for a new EP, "God's Dream," which was recorded in Austin and on a ranch in Dripping Springs, TX. For this record, the band reunited with Chris "Frenchie" Smith, who co-produced their debut EP.

Classic-era Rolling Stones. An amplified, rocking version of 60s protest folk. The raw spirit of indie rock. The soulful passion of the Violent Femmes and The Waterboys. All of these comparisons have been made in attempts to describe Southern California 5-piece Delta Spirit. Each description contains elements of the truth, but the real answer to the question 'Who is Delta Spirit?' lies within "Ode To Sunshine", the band's captivating debut. The group's DIY ethic shines throughout the album, with songs honed razor-sharp over a year of non-stop touring across America.

They combine Rat Pack style with a touch of British Invasion rock'n'roll and indie nous, add to that witty, clever songwriting and you have a quite unique combo. Being tipped all over the place as 'ones to watch'.

Two guitars, two humans, every riff in the world. May we introduce the treble warrior spazzos from Baltimore otherwise known as Ecstatic Sunshine. The playful and whimsical electric guitar duo of Matthew Papich and Dustin Wong are like a punk-lite version of John Fahey, Greg Ginn, and Bruce Springsteen. In other words they can shred, rip and roll. Having plenty of time and freedom to perfect their sound and performance while hanging out in art school and throwing parties in Baltimore's cheap industrial lofts, Ecstatic Sunshine are now ready to take their frenetic live show to kids all over the world. They will not rest until they change your life.
