About this item

Another US import label - Black Smokey Music kicks off its tenure with a rather tasty 12" from one Emil Gayes - previous of Glenn Underground's Stictly Jaz Unit fame. A southside Chicago resident, who's cut his teeth playing alongside Gene Hunt and Theo Parrish, the pedigree shows across four tracks which take on the soulful side of the Windy City blueprint in fine style. Expect flurries of Rhodes & techy perx on "Trinity" which is very Kai Alce. Organic chimes and a lively rhythm section hint at Ron Trent's Electric Blue series on "Mustaga". "Lotus" is a Instant House / Risque III-esque deep, tribal hypnotiser, and "Black Trogan" wriggles and worms like some of the more typical Glenn Underground output. All in all a solid addition to Chicago's storied house music history. Check!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: New school Chicago shit from a producer well versed in the art of house voodoo. A beautifully rich, detailed and deep EP which shows off a delicate hand, inviting sensuous dynamics. Lovers of Moodymann, Ron Trent and Joe Claussell need to get on this pronto!
